On Tuesday, December 1, 2020, a 24-year-old Nigerian man, Samuel Odupitan, who stabbed a stranger to death in order to steal his second-hand Gucci bag in Croydon, London, was convicted. In Bywood Lane, Croydon, on February 26, Odupitan, of Longheath Gardens, Croydon, killed 24-year-old Tyler Roye. Tyler, who worked in Stratford as a hotel concierge, was stabbed in the
back and abdomen five times. He was treated at the scene and at the hospital when he arrived but later died at the theater. On Tuesday, December 1, Samuel Odupitan appeared at Croydon Crown Court, where he was found guilty of murder after a brutal attack that took place just minutes away from the victim's house. The court learned that Tyler had left work at about 23.00hrs on the evening of Tuesday, 25 February, and began his journey home. He entered the same carriage as Odupitan, who had come from West Croydon, onboard a tram in East Croydon. CCTV video caught Odupitan intently observing Tyler, even changing seats to get closer to him.
Detectives think he was attracted to Tyler's distinctive Bengal tiger embossed Gucci messenger-style wallet. Tyler made his way off the tram when they reached the Arena station, totally unaware that he was being pursued by Odupitan. Tyler, who had just called his girlfriend, was confronted by Odupitan within minutes. Before the line went dead, she heard Tyler say "Bro, bro.." Prior to fleeing from the scene, Odupitan stabbed Tyler five times.
After the incident, Tyler managed to get to a friend's nearby address, where the alarm was raised. Within the house, he collapsed. One of the wounds to his torso was 15 centimeters deep and his lungs and aorta had been sliced through. Tyler was holding a bag for his family containing boxes of doughnuts. This bag was discovered close to where he had been attacked; the food strewn across the pavement was ripped open. They also found Tyler's iPhone and ear pods, but his Gucci bag was missing.
